York City’s return to the Football League has been met with true Viking spirit. The Minstermen are unbeaten in five league games and sit fifth in the table following a thrilling final-day promotion from the National League in April.
While the team continues to meet the challenges on the pitch, manager Scott Lindsey appeared unwilling to answer a slightly probing question following York’s 2-0 win over Port Vale at the weekend. A young reporter, Will Rhodes of Jorvik Radio, found himself on the receiving end of Lindsey’s sharp tongue after asking: “The first half wasn’t the best. What wasn’t clicking for your team?”
Lindsey responded sternly: “Totally disagree with you. Don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Moving on quickly, Rhodes next asked: “Do you feel your team was less energetic after Tuesday’s game?” Lindsey simply replied with an abrupt “No”.
The exchange provoked debate throughout the fanbase, with many considering Lindsey’s response to have been out of order.
Jim Rushton commented on X: “Comes across as a right t**t, not a pleasant man.” Andrew Leathley followed up on Rushton’s comments, adding: “Christ, that was a bit off from Lindsey. I think the young lad handled that well, to be honest.” Further comments labelled the York boss as a “bully” and “thin-skinned” in response to his conduct.
Others, however, were content with the way Lindsey handled the interview and praised the reporter’s chilled reaction. Russ Penn, until recently the manager of Halesowen Town, commented: “Superb interview Will, cool and calm son. Keep up the good work.” Others in the X thread failed to identify any problem with either the interview or the manager’s responses.
Lindsey is no stranger to what it takes to succeed in League Two. In 2024, he guided Crawley Town to promotion after an 8-1 aggregate victory over MK Dons in the semi-final, followed by a win over Crewe Alexandra at Wembley.
The York City boss joined the club in the summer following the departure of Stuart Maynard having previously managed Chatham Town, Swindon Town, MK Dons and two spells with Crawley Town.
