Former Plymouth Argyle and Queens Park Rangers midfielder Akos Buzsáky hasn’t been seen for a week, prompting a police search that began on the 18th of August. The 44-year-old former footballer’s disappearance has worried family, friends and fans alike, with many praying for a positive outcome.
Buzsáky began his career in his native Hungary back in 1999 with MTK Budapest. A record of 53 appearances and five goals earned him a move to Portugal in 2002. The Hungarian sadly never wore the shirt of FC Porto in a first-team competitive fixture and missed out as Porto lifted the Champions League trophy in 2004 under Jose Mourinho.
After loan spells at Académica and then Plymouth Argyle, Buzsáky would go on to sign permanently with the Pilgrims, having impressed during his first spell. Akos would spend three years at Home Park, becoming a fans’ favourite prior to joining QPR in 2006.
The longest spell of Akos Buzsáky’s career would come at Loftus Road, as he made 102 appearances for the R’s, scoring 17 times. Buzsáky would finish his career in his native Hungary with Ferencváros, with brief spells at Portsmouth and Barnsley prior to leaving England.
Now, the search for the former star, who was capped 20 times by Hungary, continues. His father, Akos Snr, spoke to Blikk regarding his son’s disappearance, saying: “I didn’t know that the police were also looking for my son,” in response to the police not having given a reason for why they are conducting the search.
Buzsáky is said to spend a lot of time working in Greece, having taken up work as a construction contractor. The midfielder also spoke about his battles with addiction following his retirement from the game. On a podcast, Buzsáky named alcohol, drugs and gambling as addictions, stating that he had fallen into one of them.
Fans on social media have expressed their concern and admiration for the career that Akos Buzsáky had in the colours of their respective teams. Joe Hylton, a QPR fan on X, stated: “Top, top player for QPR. Akos was special; he got us out of our seats every time he was on the ball…” Gosy, a Plymouth supporter, added: “One of my favourite players for Argyle. Hope you are safe, Akos.”
