The new season brings happiness and optimism to many across the footballing pyramid, with supporters figuring out routes to new grounds and excitement building towards the big kick-off of the opening fixture. This particular mood gripped Spennymoor Town’s supporters as they headed west to face Morecambe in their first game of the new National League North season.
Despite a 1-1 draw at the Bay Stadium, the main topic of conversation on social media centred around a complaint from the Spennymoor Town FC Fan Group concerning an unwelcome bout of air pollution while the supporters’ bus was in transit. A supporter had visited the bus’s onboard facilities and proceeded to turn the air green.
Writing on social media site ‘X’, the Spennymoor Town FC Fan Group posted: “Someone’s had a poo on our bus. Feel free to come forward and pay your £20 fine. This is the worst thing I’ve ever smelt.”
The post instantly caught traction and led to speculation surrounding who the culprit actually was and whether or not £20 was a sufficient fine. Those who commented on the post hinted at perhaps a €50 penalty, in line with the infamous quip by a Greek hotel owner in The Inbetweeners Movie.
Others brought forward their own opening-day bus stories, with Dave Williams, a Southport FC supporter, writing: “One of the young lads was throwing up all over one of ours less than 90 minutes into the new season.” Southport had travelled in the opposite direction to Spennymoor, having opened the season away at Hebburn Town. Dave’s day unfortunately didn’t improve, as his side were beaten 3-1.
The Spennymoor Town FC supporters’ bus is due for its next outing away at Scarborough on Tuesday night, with those who have purchased tickets for the coach praying for an incident-free journey and windows that open. Both sides go into the match at The Flamingo Land Stadium searching for their first three points of the season.
